I am looking to travel to Russia for about a week. I want to visit Moscow and St. Petersburg but I hear that you must get a visa in order to travel to Russia. Is this difficult to get? Would you recommend visiting these cities or would you recommend visiting some of the cities in the neighboring countries (ie. Riga, Helsinki, Talinn)?

As is always the case with such vague question, the answer is – It Depends.

What country are you a citizen of?

What country are you a resident of?

What is your age?

Do you have a criminal record?

These all have a major impact on the ease of the visa application process. For example: you would have a much easier time getting a Russian visa if you are a US citizen, as opposed to – say – a citizen of Somalia. If you are a citizen of a CIS country you don't need a visa at all. Since you didn't think to mention this, I will assume you are American. Go to the link below, click on consular section, download the application, and follow the directions for filing it.

As for where to visit – why are you going? What do you want to see or do? Wouldn't that dictate your destination?

I also think a week for both Moscow and St. Petersburg is a waste; I spent 2 weeks in St. Petersburg alone, and didn't see it all. Perhaps a week in each city ….

Keep in mind the travel time. Assuming you are in fact from North America, figure at least 10 hours in the air between your "gateway" city and your destination in Russia; add to that the time required to get to the airport with the international departure. Add to that the plane change waits and the time zone changes – you will be traveling a full day in each direction.

It depends on how you want to travel in Russia.

If you choose to go via a tour. The tour company will assist in getting your invitation and organising visa.

If you choose to back pack via yourself, you will need to organise an invitation from a Russian citizen or get one through the embassy.

Once in Russia you also need to get your visa paper done at a police station. If they are all not stamped correctly when you leave they will fine you.

You will need to carry your passport at all times incase a policeman wants to see it. Just watch out for the scams. Check out some of the local Russians scam by Lonely Planet.

My husband read somewhere that they are making it so that you don't need to get a visa to travel to Russia, anyone know if this is true? He was under the impression that it would be happen soon. Please tell me anything you know about this, including when it will occur and if it is permanent.

Apparently there have been discussions with regards to the visa situation betwen Russia nad the EU but nothing has been agreed yet, and many people both in Russia nad the EU think that its a good idea to keep the visa system in place to prevent the free movement of terrorists.

There are occasions though when it has been possible to visit Russia wihtout a visa such as when Manchester United played Chelsea in Moscow a couple of years ago. I have heard that it is possible to visit Russia without a visa for 72hrs visa free if taking a holiday on a Baltic cruise ship

my aunt has received a visa to come to America, would she be able to travel by airplane (within United States)?

Log in to Reply September 17, 2012 at 12:44 pm

Yes of course, overseas and intercontinental flights only land in a number of big airports, many visitors need to take a connecting flight to get to their final destinations. Tourists and visitors can board an airplane in the US with their passport that shows a valid visa.

I would like to travel with my friend to Russia alone, without being part of a tourist group. However, it is my understanding that there is a higher rejection for tourist visa application without an accompanying letter from a travel agency. Is this really the case? Also, because my itinerary is required for the Russian visa, does it mean that I must have purchased my plane tickets *before* the visa application?

Thanks!

The higher rate of rejection story that you heard was probably from a travel agency. You do not have to use a travel agency, and not using one will not decrease your chance of getting a visa. It's pretty hard to get rejected for a Russian visa if you fill out the forms and submit them correctly. I've never even heard of anyone having to go for an interview, though the Russian Embassy and Consulates reserve that right.

You should not buy your tickets in advance; this is always a poor move when applying for a visa to most countries and you do not need to send in any bank statements.

You need to make your hotel reservations long in advance, because your faxed or scanned hotel reservation will serve as your invitation.

This is not a complicated process (tourist visa) and certainly does not require the assistance of a tour agency. I've done this 6 times in the past without ever having any problem. If you can follow instructions, you can do it easily.

Go the the Russian Embassy website and read the instructions, download the forms, and have a great time. One thing you need to know is that when you send everything to the Embassy or Consulate serving your area, (this is shown on the website also, but you can use the Washington Embassy regardless of where in the US you live) you will need to enclose a stamped self addressed envelope to get your passport and visa back to you. I typically used a 2nd day mail package, with the postage already on it, folded, from the Post office.

While it is necessary to register with the Russian authorities within three working days of your arrival, your hotel does this for you and you are not even involved with the process. It's the "inviter" who is responsible for registration.

As far as your itinerary goes, you just need to list the different Russian cities that you are planning to visit.

if some one wanted to come from russia to the US , who do they go to about getting the visa and cost of the document

Log in to Reply September 17, 2012 at 12:44 pm

For tourist visas visa processing fee – $ 100, which is non-refundable. If a person wants a 2-year visa (instead of a one year visa), then it'll cost another $ 100, which is paid only if the case is approved.

A person applying for the visa has to prove availability of funds for the travel and ties with Russia which will guarantee his/her return.

I have my Letter of Invitation (which lists only Moscow). I'm going to get my Visa tomorrow. Can I leave Moscow and travel to St. Petersburg?

Log in to Reply September 17, 2012 at 12:44 pm

sure. visa is for country, not for city. but you will need to register in St.Pete (as well as in Moscow) – if you stay in hotel, they'll do it for you.
